# Scan a barcode / add a custom ingredient

Use barcode scan for packaged foods in the catalog. When lookup fails or the item isn’t listed, add a **custom ingredient** so you can keep logging the day.

## Scan a barcode

1. Open the Planner (or the add-food flow).
2. Choose barcode / scan.
3. Allow camera access if asked.
4. Center a clear UPC or EAN until the app locks a match.

If the camera won’t open, check browser permissions and try again on HTTPS. If lookup returns nothing, add a custom ingredient instead of retrying endlessly.

## Add a custom ingredient

1. Choose **Custom ingredient** (or equivalent) from the add-food flow.
2. Enter a name and nutrients you know (label per serving or per 100 g).
3. Save, then add it to the meal like any other food.

Custom ingredients stay on your account; they are not clinical advice — treat label data carefully.

## Lookup failed?

Retry once with better lighting. If it still fails, use a custom ingredient and optionally email support with the barcode digits only — not a photo of a clinical screen.
